How Being “Ordinary” Landed Me a National Ad

How Being “Ordinary” Landed Me a National Ad

Lesson: The Day Starbucks Chose Me for Got Milk

Back in my Starbucks days, the Got Milk campaign selected me to represent the brand nationally. I went through multiple rounds: district nominations, regional picks, executive reviews - until it came down to headshots. I flew to New York, excited, convinced I’d been chosen for my “model” potential. When I finally asked why they picked me, the producer said: “We chose you because you look so ordinary.” I laughed, but it stuck with me.

Insight: Ordinary Wins More Than You Think

Here’s what that experience taught me:

  1. Relatability Beats Perfection: People connect with authenticity, not polish. Being real is a competitive edge.

  2. Consistency Builds Credibility: You don’t need to stand out by being flashy - show up, perform, and embody the values daily.

  3. Humility Travels Further: When you stop trying to be impressive, you make space for others to see themselves in your story.

Being “average” wasn’t a disadvantage, it made me more approachable, more trustworthy, and, ironically, more visible.

Action Item: Audit Your Authenticity

This week, take a quick check on your brand (personal or business):

  1. Ask Three People: How do I actually come across? Genuine? Overpolished? Distant?

  2. Drop One Mask: Identify one area where you’re trying too hard to appear perfect.

  3. Double Down on Real: Speak, write, or show up the way you actually are. People can feel the difference.
