Being “average” wasn’t a disadvantage, it made me more approachable, more trustworthy, and, ironically, more visible.

Back in my Starbucks days, the Got Milk campaign selected me to represent the brand nationally. I went through multiple rounds: district nominations, regional picks, executive reviews - until it came down to headshots. I flew to New York, excited, convinced I’d been chosen for my “model” potential. When I finally asked why they picked me, the producer said: “We chose you because you look so ordinary.” I laughed, but it stuck with me.
Here’s what that experience taught me:
