Why I Don’t Go to Every One of My Kids’ Events

Your kids will copy your actions, not your words. Be the example you want them to emulate.

Why I Don’t Go to Every One of My Kids’ Events

Lesson: Choosing Presence Over Perfection

I want to be at every event my kids have: every game, recital, performance, every moment. But the truth is, I can’t. If I try to attend everything, something else (my health, business, or marriage) will suffer. Life is about how you allocate your limited hours. And the key isn’t doing it all, it’s being intentional about what matters most, and showing your kids what it means to live with purpose.

Insight: Kids Follow Who You Are, Not What You Say

Here’s what I’ve learned as a dad and entrepreneur:

  1. You Are the Model: Your kids will copy your actions, not your words. Be the example you want them to emulate.

  2. Balance Is Built through Integration, Not Found: You’ll always be making trade-offs; the goal is to make them consciously, which is why I believe in Life Integration over Balance.

  3. Sacrifice Teaches Value: When kids see you commit, they learn that meaningful things take consistency and hard choices because it’s not just what you say but also what you do.

Your presence isn’t just about being there physically, it’s about showing them how to live a full, disciplined, and values driven life.

Action Item: Redefine Presence This Week
  1. List What Matters Most: (Family, health, business, rest) put it on paper.
  2. Assign Time by Intention: Decide what gets your energy this week, not just your time.

  3. Explain Your Why: Tell your kids (or your team) why you’re making certain choices, model transparency, not guilt.
