My First Tattoo at 45

Sometimes growth isn’t about learning something new. It’s about finally deciding what won’t change.

My First Tattoo at 45

Lesson: The First Time I Was 100% Sure

I’m fully in my midlife crisis and I’m not even mad about it. Earring, man bun, started boxing, and a month ago I got my first tattoo. Funny part is I co-own a tattoo cosmetics company and had zero tattoos. But sitting there, I realized something. Getting a tattoo forces you to know yourself. For most of my life, I’ve been adaptable, always evolving, always changing my mind when better information shows up. But this time, I knew. One word: girldad. First time in my life I felt 100% certain about something permanent.

Insight: Clarity Comes From Stepping Into Discomfort
  1. Certainty Is Rare, But Powerful - Most of life is flexible, but when something feels permanently true, it’s worth paying attention.
  2. Great Partners Expand Your World - My partner Kelly stepped into my world and mastered the operational side. Getting this tattoo was me stepping into hers. That’s what real partnership looks like.
  3. Identity Drives Decisions - The more you understand what truly defines you, the easier it becomes to make aligned choices in business and life.

Sometimes growth isn’t about learning something new. It’s about finally deciding what won’t change.

Action Item: Define Your “Permanent”
  1. Ask Yourself What Won’t Change: What belief, role, or value will still be true 10, 20, 30 years from now?
  2. Write It Down in One Word or Phrase: Simple, clear, and undeniable.
  3. Start Making Decisions From That Place: Let that identity guide how you show up daily.
